SUBJECT: Curbing Atmospheric Pollution

Everyone is against pollution. Yet we continue to pollute our atmosphere with gases that drive global warming and the climate chaos we are experiencing. Without concerted and urgent action we will exhaust the pollution allowance for holding global warming within the critical two degrees Centigrade above the pre-industrial level. Because power utilities and fossil fuel users are allowed to pump this pollution into our atmosphere with no charge, their energy can outcompete renewable energy sources that do not emit these gases.

We are all part of the problem! Isn’t it time for us all to be part of the solution?

The most effective way to achieve a reduction in these devastating greenhouse gas emissions is to regulate those fossil fuels causing the emissions. One way of addressing this problem is a Tax or Fee on emissions such as British Columbia has adopted, another approach comprises an emissions Cap and Trade (or Cap and Allocation) such as that in effect in California and several eastern states forming the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.

On March 31st, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm in the Medford Public Library, the next Southern Oregon Climate Action Now meeting will feature an exploration of the available mechanisms. Sherrill Rinehart of the Southern Oregon Citizens Climate Lobby Chapter will discuss the Carbon Fee and Dividend approach, and Tom Bowerman, Project Director with Policy Interactive will discuss the Cap and Allocation approach. Meanwhile, Sam Becker will discuss Bills introduced by Oregon Climate that focus on returning Dividends to Oregonians, and SOCAN Board member David Beale will discuss other carbon tax bills. Designed for those who know little about these ideas, the session will include an explanation of the basic concepts as well as a discussion of Federal proposals and bills before the Oregon State Legislature. The meeting is free and open to the public. Anyone interested in learning about reigning in greenhouse gas emissions is invited to join us.
